Get Off the Road:If possible, pull over as far to the right as you can and out of the flow of traffic.
Stay Inside Your Vehicle:Buckle up and stay inside your vehicle with your hazard lights flashing.
Avoid Walking Along the Road:If you need to leave your vehicle, do so from the side away from traffic and walk along the shoulder or median.
Make Yourself Visible:Hanging a loose piece of brightly colored cloth from your window can help attract attention.
Use Road Flares or Reflective Triangles:Place them a safe distance from your vehicle to warn other drivers.
Be careful about accepting help: Strangers who see you’re having trouble may stop to offer assistance. They may be well-intentioned, but you should use caution when accepting help from strangers. While many people might be able to handle a tire change in a parking lot, things can get a lot more complicated when trying to do the same thing on the shoulder of a busy highway. If you’ve already called us, thank them for stopping and tell them you’ve got professional help on the way.
